I´ve already read the report. It´s exactly what happened. I was totally a psychopath then. I was the one who went to the newspapers to challenge them. Today people cannot understand what was going on in Rio at that time. What Hugo Duarte said was totally true. Luta-Livre guys were totally dominating Rio streets at that time. They were the owners of Rio.
Were you in the day when Luta-Livre people invaded Gracie Academy ?
I was there. I was a purple belt at that time. I was training at Carlson's when someone called and said that Luta-Livre guys invaded Gracie Academy. I called some black belt in Carlson and only Clovis came with me. Hugo and Rickson fought in front of the school where the Gracie Academy is located and once again Rickson beat him. After that Eugênio Tadeu and Royler also fought and I got really impressed how brave Helio Gracie was. That´s why I always respected him a lot. He was about 80 years old and lead everything. After this day I started to respect Helio Gracie even more. The fight was stopped by the police.
So, when you faced Eugênio 3 years latter you admired him ?
No I was totally revolted, I hated him because I could not accept a guy from another martial art style had knocked out Pitangui (vale-tudo maracanãzinho 1984) and gave such a hard time to Royler twice. In my opinion it could not happen so it made me train hard, got some more experience to face him in 1991. Actually Luta-Livre people wanted me against Eugênio in the very first match because they believed he would beat me for sure.
But you looked pretty nervous on the tape ?
Nervous ?! I was totally excited. It´s in my blood I said to everybody that I would beat him in two minutes.
How was the training?
I use to train many times in a day. Before going to Carlson to train I used to go to Barra about 7 o clock in the morning to train with Jorge Pereira who was going to fight a Luta-Livre guy (Alexandre Salim) in a closed door challenge. Carlinhos Gracie used to train us. Can you belive that ? At that time Gracie Barra people were my big rivals and Carlos Gracie helped me to train to face Luta-Livre. Besides Jorge Pereira, I trained with Ralph and Renzo Gracie and also Roberto “Gordo" Correia who was one of my big rivals in Jiu-Jitsu. For the first time all the Jiu-Jistu got united.
Is it true that Carlson took out the Gi and trained with you ?
People can never forget about Carlson. He was like a magician of Vale-Tudo. He taught us many positions, Carlson is a genius. He was already around 50 years old and trained with us and everybody was really impressed. Carlson has always been an amazing trainer.
Do you think that if Luta-Livre win that vale-tudo the history would be different?
For sure. As you showed in the report, today all Luta-Livre fighters work in other fields. Maybe if we had lost today Fábio Gurgel, Bustamante and I could be doing other things. It´s curious to see how life changes. Today I consider Hugo and Eugênio as friends, everybody has to respect those guys for their bravery. They are real warriors and because of that I consider them like winners. Today I think everybody has to train together. People have no idea how was tough was the relationship between Wallid and Barra Gracie. Yesterday I met Carlinhos Gracie and told him that his Team (GBCT) was my main partner in Jungle Fight 3 and he said, world turns. I met Rickson few weeks ago in a supermarket in Los Angeles he put his hand in my shoulder and said: 'How are you Wallid ?' and I was happy with that. My wife said: you are not kids anymore and I had to agree with her. This is evolution. Once I met Hugo in a shopping mall and we almost fought for real, today he is my friend and some guys who use to be my best training partners in Carlson don´t talk to me.
